Chapter Four
The next day, I was all alone in the house and fixing myself a sandwich when the doorbell rang. I looked out through a side window and was totally unprepared for the sight of Dre standing there, wearing the most somber expression I’d ever seen on his face.
“It’s Mom,” he said. “She passed out at work. They took her to Emory. LT’s with her.”
I bombarded him with questions all the way to the hospital but he didn’t know much more than he’d told me already.
Mom was a floor manager at J. C.Penneys at Northlake Mall. Her friend, Deborah, had told Dre she’d seen Mom walking through the racks and then she just went down, just hit the floor and they couldn’t revive her. Deborah had grabbed Mom’s handbag and gone with her in the ambulance but she’d been freaking out because she couldn’t get into Mom’s password–protected cellphone to find either Dre or LT’s number. Finally, the EMT’s revived her and Mom had been able to give her the password. LT went straight to the hospital but Dre had swung around to come pick me up.
We met LT in the Emergency Room and rushed up to him. He said Mom had been taken for tests and that we’d just missed Deborah who’d made him promise to call as soon as he heard anything.
We waited there for hours, none of us talking much. It was hard for me to believe that just a few weeks ago, I’d been having so much fun at my birthday party and now Mom was in Emergency, maybe fighting something serious. Shit seemed unreal, everything, the hard white lights, the uncomfortable chairs, the other people sitting around us, their eyes glazed.
“Leonard Hodge?” A short, Hispanic–looking woman in glasses was looking around the waiting room, her expression serious. We leapt to her side.
“I’m Leonard,” LT said. He hated the name Leonard but, unless he went down to City Hall and did something about it, that was the name he had to give.
“I’m Doctor Morales.”
“Is Moms all right?” Dre broke in.
Dr. Morales grimaced. “Her blood pressure is way above normal. Is she on any medication?”
We shook our heads. Moms was in her early fifties and pretty fit for her age, or so we’d thought.
“Has she complained of chest pain or dizziness or anything like that, recently?”
My brothers shook their heads and looked at me. “We don’t live at home anymore. He does,” Dre said, nodding at me.
I frowned, remembering all those times that Moms hadn’t felt well over the last few weeks. “Actually, she’s been kinda low recently. Talking about headaches and gas but it’s her chest that’s been hurting her.”
The doctor nodded, listening intently. “But there’ve been no fainting spells or anything like that?”
I shook my head.
“All right, well, like I said, we’ll run some more tests. It could be a number of things, some serious, some not so serious but we’ll definitely be keeping her overnight for observation.”
“Can we see her?”
“Not just yet. Maybe in another couple hours when we’ve finished running her through a range of tests.
